Shared ownership rent and service charges

Shared Ownership rent:

Rent is payable on the 1st of every month in advance as per your lease. If you fail to pay your rent we can apply to the courts for possession of your property.


Shared Ownership service charges:

A service charge is a payment you make towards the costs of providing and maintaining services for the estate you live on.  

The service charge will vary depending on where you live and covers things like: 

You must pay your share of the costs of managing and maintaining your estate. This is a legal duty set out in your lease. If you do not pay your share, you are breaking your lease agreement and further action may be taken.  

Service charges are a key consideration in taking on a lease and are part and parcel of becoming a leaseholder. 

We will always be fair about service charges. We will explain how they are calculated, and you can challenge any charges you do not agree with. If you have financial problems, we may be able to make other arrangements to help you pay your service charges.

What if I don't think my bill is correct?

What if I'm finding it hard to pay my rent or service charges?

If you are struggling to pay your service charges or rent, please contact us on 01204 328000 straight away.

We can help you by: 

  • Finding the right payment method.
  • Setting up affordable repayment plans to pay arrears.
  • Checking you are claiming all the benefits you are entitled to (even if you are working).
  • Reducing your other household bills (including gas, electric, and water).
  • Managing your finances and dealing with any debts you may have.
  • Supporting you back into training or employment.

What will happen if I don't pay my rent or service charges?

If you don't pay your rent or service charges, we can apply to the courts for possession of your property. This would be a last resort and we'd encourage you to contact us right away if you're having difficulties.
