Keeping warm this winter

Keeping warm this winter

Winter can be a hard time and so it’s important that we stay warm and well in the colder months.

Over the next couple of weeks, we will be launching our ‘Keeping warm this winter’ campaign on Facebook and Instagram, which shares some really helpful information on how you can stay warm as the weather gets colder.

Our 'Keeping warm this winter' guidance covers:

Energy debts

Struggling with energy debts? You may be able to get some help from these energy trusts, charities and providers:

  • British Gas Energy Trust is an independent charity that gives grants and advice to those struggling with energy debt, including non-British Gas customers - Independent fuel debt advice – British Gas Energy Trust
  • Charis is a charity that administers funds on behalf of energy companies to help their customers. This includes the EDF Customer Support Fund, the E.ON Next Energy Fund, and the Let's Talk Energy Fund for OVO and Rebel Energy customers, which can provide debt relief and help with purchasing appliances - Charis Grants: Empowering Positive Change.

Other supplier funds - Many energy providers have their own hardship funds or support schemes for their customers:

Energy tariffs

Are you on the right gas or electricity tariff? It’s important to consider whether a Fixed or Standard Variable Tariff works best for you.

To ensure you’re getting the best deal on your energy, we recommend that you use an energy comparison website to check out the tariffs available from the providers.

Small changes = Big difference

As Winter approaches and temperatures drop, we wanted a share a few top tips to help you keep your home safe and warm:

  • Draught-Proofing Strips: Apply self-adhesive foam, rubber, or brush strips around window and door frames to seal gaps. This is a very cost-effective DIY fix.
  • Use Curtains and Blinds: Install thick or thermal-lined curtains and blinds. Open them during sunny days to let in natural heat and close them at dusk to trap the warmth inside.
  • Door Snakes/Excluders: Place a fabric or foam draught excluder (or a rolled-up towel/blanket) at the base of doors to block cold air from entering the room.
  • Window Insulation Film: Apply a clear plastic film over windows to create an extra insulating layer of air. A hairdryer can be used to shrink the film for a tight seal.
  • Cover Keyholes and Letterboxes: Use purpose-made covers or brushes to stop draughts from these small openings.
  • Radiator Reflectors: Place reflective foil panels behind radiators, especially those on external walls, to bounce heat back into the room rather than letting the wall absorb it.
  • Use Rugs and Carpets: Laying down thick rugs or carpets (with good underlay) can provide an extra layer of floor insulation and make rooms feel warmer underfoot, particularly on uninsulated wood or tile floors.

Warm spaces

You can feel connected, supported, and part of your community at a warm space near you.

Hundreds of local people have been benefitting from warm, welcoming, and friendly spaces where they can enjoy hot drinks, Wi-Fi, activities, and connecting with others.

Everyone’s welcome at their local warm space: and finding one for you or a loved one is easy.  Councils, voluntary organisations, and businesses are just some of those opening their doors to provide warm spaces to members of the community. To find your nearest warm space, just visit www.warmwelcome.uk and use their interactive map to find a space for you or a loved one.

Please check the opening times online before visiting as they can vary by location.
