Protect yourself against doorstep fraudsters

Protect yourself against doorstep fraudsters

We’re urging everyone to stay alert to bogus callers, also known as doorstep fraudsters, rogue traders or distraction burglars - who pretend to be from trusted organisations to gain access to your home.

These criminals may claim to be from a utility company, charity, housing provider, or council, and use tactics like intimidation or distraction to gain trust and persuade people to let them in. They often use their access to homes to steal money and valuables or commit other crimes such as identity theft and fraud.

To protect yourself from bogus callers:

  • Ask for ID: always ask to see identification from anyone wanting to come into your home. Our staff will always wear ID badges.

For the vast majority of our visits to your home, you’ll know to expect us. But there’ll be some urgent or specific situations when we might need to visit you without an appointment. If you’re worried, phone us on 01204 328000. Our staff, or anyone working on our behalf, won’t be offended if you call us to check they are who they say they are.

  • Be on your guard: keep your doors locked and check who’s knocking before opening.

  • Never give out personal details like your name, address, or bank info to uninvited visitors.

  • Never agree to any deals or discounts without verifying the person and the offer. These could be tricks to try and get into your home.

Suspect a bogus caller? We'd encourage you to contact the police as this can help prevent others from falling victim to these criminals.

You can also report bogus callers or anyone you think is suspicious by phoning us on 01204 328008 or emailing safeguarding@boltonathome.org.uk.
