People behind progress: celebrating science and innovation for LGBT+ History Month 2026

Science and innovation shape everyday life, from the technology in our homes to breakthroughs that keep us healthy.

This LGBT+ History Month, the UK is celebrating the theme science and innovation, shining a light on the LGBTQ+ people who’ve helped move the world forward.

Their stories show something simple but powerful: progress is strongest when everyone is included.

Each year, the national campaign highlights five figures whose work changed their field. This year’s list includes:

  • Barbara Burford: a medical researcher who helped establish NHS equality and diversity guidelines, creating fairer systems in healthcare.
  • Charles Beyer: a locomotive engineer and founding member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, influencing industrial infrastructure still relied on today.
  • Elke Mackenzie: a botanist whose Antarctic research expanded scientific understanding of extreme environments.
  • Jemma Redmond: pioneering biotechnologist whose work in 3D bioprinting opened new possibilities in medical science.
  • Robert Boyle: a founder of modern chemistry and a key figure in shaping the scientific method that underpins much of modern science.

Imagine what progress looks like when every voice gets to shape it.

That’s the spirit of LGBT+ History Month (each February) and why highlighting these stories matters.

For us, this month also reflects our year‑round commitments:

  • Fairness, dignity and zero tolerance for discrimination.
  • Inclusive culture, inclusive services, inclusive leadership.

We’re guided by our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy and Strategy, which you can read in the policies and strategies section on our website here: www.boltonathome.org.uk/our-policies-and-strategies.
