Heating control signal switch-off – check your meter

The Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS), which controls heating and hot water in some homes, started a phased switch-off on 30 June 2025. The signal is being turned off gradually by area. If your home still uses an RTS meter, your heating and hot water may stop working properly, and your energy bills could rise.

What is RTS?

RTS meters use a radio signal to switch between peak and off-peak electricity rates. They were linked to tariffs like Economy 7, Economy 10, or Total Heat Total Control. This technology is now out of date and is being phased out.

Why it matters

If your RTS meter hasn’t been replaced:

  • Heating and hot water may stop working correctly.
  • Storage heaters may charge at the wrong time or not at all.
  • You could face higher energy costs.

How to check if you have an RTS meter

You may still have one if:

  • There’s a “Radio Teleswitch” label on or near your meter.
  • Your home uses electric storage heaters or electric-only heating.
  • You’re on a tariff like Economy 7, Economy 10, or Total Heat Total Control.
  • Your home doesn’t have a gas supply.

If you’re unsure, don’t wait for the signal to go - contact your electricity supplier.

What to do next

Act now to avoid disruption:

  • Contact your electricity supplier first – they can confirm if you have an RTS meter and arrange a smart meter upgrade or another solution. Upgrades can take time, so it’s best to act early.
