Fire safety in flats: Why video doorbells and alterations aren’t allowed

Your safety is our top priority. We’d like to remind all residents not to attach video doorbells (such as Ring doorbells) or make any alterations to your flat entrance door.

These doors are specially designed fire doors, and even small changes can affect their ability to protect you and your neighbours in the event of a fire.

Why video doorbells and other changes aren’t allowed:

  • Compromises fire safety: Drilling or sticking things onto fire doors can weaken their structure and make them less effective in a fire.
  • Interferes with self-closing devices: Fire doors must close automatically to stop fire and smoke spreading. Doorbells or other attachments can obstruct this mechanism.
  • Breaches safety regulations: Altering fire doors may break fire safety laws and our internal Building Safety and Fire Policies.

Fire safety requirements:

  • No alterations: Your tenancy agreement doesn’t allow changes to your property without permission - this includes your front door.
  • Self-closing doors: These must stay intact and functional. Please don’t remove or tamper with them.
  • Annual safety checks: We carry out yearly inspections of flat entrance doors. If you have any concerns, please report them straightaway.
