Could thousands of pounds be slipping through your fingers?

Could thousands of pounds be slipping through your fingers?

This week (Monday 15 September to Friday 19 September 2025) is Pension Awareness Week – a national reminder to think about our futures. But for many, the challenge isn’t just what lies ahead - it’s making sure retirement feels secure today. That’s where Pension Credit comes in. It might take a little time to see if you qualify, but the extra coming in could make a real difference and bring peace of mind in the months and years ahead.

What is Pension Credit?

If you’re over State Pension age (currently 66), Pension Credit is designed to top up your income and unlock extra help with bills, health costs, and more. Even if you think you don’t qualify, it’s worth checking - some eligible people don’t realise they could get it.

How much could it be worth?

On average, Pension Credit is worth over £3,900 a year - and it can also open the door to:

  • Bill support: help with Council Tax, energy costs, and more.
  • Health benefits: assistance with dental treatment, glasses, and transport costs for hospital appointments.
  • Peace of mind: financial security to focus on what matters most.

Who should check?

If your weekly income is below £227.10 (single) or £346.60 (couple), it’s time to take a look.

Even if your income is slightly above these thresholds, you might still qualify, especially if you have modest savings, a disability, or caring responsibilities.

Know someone who might benefit?

Encouraging them to check could make all the difference. If they’ve always cared for others, now’s the time to ensure they’re getting the help they deserve.

How to check:

  • Go to the government website: www.gov.uk/pension-credit.
  • Use the Pension Credit calculator to see how much you could get.
  • Or call the Pension Credit line on 0800 99 1234 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm).
  • Prefer paper forms? You can print and post your application.
