Doing your own home improvements

If you want to make an improvement or substantial change to your home (other than internal decoration), then you’ll need to get permission from us first.

You’ll need to submit a written request detailing the work you want to carry out.  You can download the Tenant’s Permission Request forms below.  Or you can call 01204 338200 and ask for us to send you one.  Once you’ve completed the form, return it to your neighbourhood housing office.

If you want to build an extension or loft conversion, plans must be drawn up and submitted to us as well as the council Planning Department for appropriate approval.  More information on planning can be found on the Bolton Council website.

If you request and are granted given permission to undertake gas or electrical works, then you must have the work carried out by a gas Be Safe registered engineer or an electrician who is qualified to BS 7671 IEE Wiring Regulations 17th Edition standards.

In the case of gas installations, on completion of the work, an installation and safety check should be requested from our technical services team. Call 01204 338200.

In the case of non-traditional constructed properties, and Lowton Cubbitt properties in particular, we can’t give permission to remove any internal walls in the property. This is because the internal walls are integral to the safety of the property and removing them would pose a serious risk.

Any alterations carried out without consent may be given retrospective permission.  But we may ask you to remove the alteration and restore the property to its original condition.  This will be at your own cost.

If you have a physical disability and feel you need your home adapting to suit your needs, then visit our pages on adapting homes for people with disabilities.
