The Mayor and Mayoress of Bolton delivered an array of green fingered gifts to Harper Green School, in Farnworth, this week.
Mayor of Bolton, Councillor Noel Spencer MBE presented wheelbarrows, spades, rakes, brushes and snow shovels to some of the 80 pupils taking part in the school’s Learning for Life programme.
The course, piloted by Harper Green across years 10 and 11, is helping the youngsters develop their personal and employability skills through working in the local community, including making environmental improvements.
Equipment worth £450 was donated by Bolton at Home, who have partnered up with the school and Bolton Council’s Environmental Services to provide work experience opportunities out on a number of its estates.
The Mayor said: “We’re proud to see the youngsters grow through their commitment to this course and they’re playing an important role in strengthening community spirit through the contributions they’re making to local areas.”
Andrew Foster, Deputy Head Teacher at Harper Green, paid tribute to the pupils saying: “They’re a credit to the school and their families and the skills, aspirations and teamwork they’re developing will stand them in good stead for the future.”
