Housing apprentices to sail the Irish Sea in tall ship challenge

A team of apprentices will learn how to man a tall ship as they set sail for a week-long challenge in the Irish Sea as part of the 2015 Apprentice Ship Cup.

The event, in its second year, will see 11 apprentices from housing companies across Greater Manchester and Nottingham join a fleet of traditional tall ships as they sail from Dublin to Scotland (15 – 19 June).

Before they embark on their journey aboard the Pelican of London, the apprentices will be trained by a professional crew who will also join them for the trip along with mentors.

They will learn how to sail the vessel, follow their route, operate masts and even take part in night watches on the boat.

Apprentices from Bolton at Home, New Charter Homes, Gedling Homes and One Manchester are sailing in the cup and will represent Manchester Athena Limited on their sailing adventure.

Manchester Athena Limited is a partnership between 12 registered housing providers across Greater Manchester to help tackle unemployment and provide training and learning opportunities for residents and employees.

John Robinson, 20, is one of our four apprentices taking part. He said: “I wanted to take on a personal challenge this year and so this is a perfect opportunity to test myself in different and demanding circumstances. I’m really looking forward to working as part of a crew and feel fortunate to gain such a special experience.”
