Home is where the art is

Our Highfield House residents have produced an array of artwork for their communal lounge and garden.

Armchair patchworks, paper flowers, window sun catchers, hanging hearts and more decorative effects create an art trail, where materials meet memories.

Highfield House is one of our sheltered housing sites and it’s located off Highfield Road in Farnworth.

Over several weeks, a number of residents worked with artist Dani Gaines. Together they’ve created colourful and personal artworks on the theme of memories of love and feelings.

Phyllis Morgan, 92, said: “We’ve loved doing it. I’ve enjoyed the company, we’ve reminisced about old times and made things out of different materials.”

Chairs, tables and walls are now adorned with vivid paints, clay, plastics and wicker.

The communal garden also now features a colourful rock garden.

Irene Hinsley, 88, added: “It’s got us out of our flats and I can’t wait to show my family what we’ve done.”

Dani summed-up: “This demonstrates, powerfully, the benefits of creative, social activities for people at risk of social isolation and the positive impact on their wellbeing.

“The participants have flourished after coming to the first session thinking they wouldn't be able to do the activities because of dexterity and disability issues. Each week they completed a different creative challenge.

“Their life experiences and feelings have been recorded in written and photographic art works, which means a lot to them.

“We've used the indoor and outside space at Highfield House and the group have decided to continue meeting each week as a self-run craft group.”
