Careline raises £753 for charity close to home

Staff members from Careline took on a series of physical challenges to raise more than £750 for the Breast Unit at The Royal Bolton Hospital, after one of their colleagues was diagnosed with breast cancer.

A team of 16 employees from our community alarm service built rafts and tackled a climbing frame during the testing activity sessions at Burrs Country Park in Bury.

Thanks to sponsorship from colleagues, friends and family, the money will support the hospital’s Bra Fund and buy post-operative bras and prosthetics for women battling breast cancer.

Post-operative bras are designed to help make recovery from breast surgery more comfortable and differ based on the type of surgery.

Donna Karim and Carolina Hook-Aguirre helped to organise the fundraising event and presented a cheque to staff at the Breast Unit.

Carolina said: “We can’t imagine what our colleague is going through but we wanted to make a positive contribution and put a smile on her face. We were all really motivated to take on the team challenge and encouraged each other along the way. Donna’s fundraising experience was invaluable too, she’s previously raised money to provide clean water wells in Malawi.”

Donna added: “We’d like to thank everyone who sponsored us, it’ll really make a difference to women in Bolton who are affected by breast cancer. The plan is to fundraise for different causes each year.”

Mal Sheridan, Health Care Assistant, Bolton Breast Unit, said: “We’d like to thank the staff at Careline for their fantastic efforts and for thinking of us and our patients with their donation. We also wish their colleague all the best.”

Careline, which marked its 25th anniversary in 2015, helps more than 6,000 customers live a more independent life. As well as assisting older people, it provides a vital service to people with disabilities or long-term illnesses, those experiencing domestic violence or people who need extra reassurance.

Customers pay a small weekly, monthly or annual charge for the 24/7 service and have a small unit that connects to their phone that can be activated by a pendant that they wear. Careline staff then assess the situation and respond in a number of ways, including sending a staff member, doctor, friend or relative, or the emergency services.
