Bolton at Home has received special recognition from the Government for the
ways in which Urban Care and Neighbourhood (UCAN) Centres help local
communities to address issues important to them.
Services delivered through a developing network of UCAN centres include
housing and health advice, and also services that have been requested by
residents such as internet access and tutor supported IT drop in sessions,
young peoples activities, and assistance with neighbourhood issues.
Currently, UCAN Centres are in Oxford Grove, Tonge Fold and Farnworth, with
two more centres in development at Tonge Moor and Oldhams.
The centres encourage and enable access to learning and employment
opportunities through volunteering, information, guidance and support.
Bolton at Home was shortlisted for the 2005 Deputy Prime Minister’s Award
for Sustainable Communities from around 200 applications across the country.
Selection criteria for the award looked at how well projects promote
sustainable communities in terms of being active and inclusive,
environmentally sensitive, well connected and fair for everyone.
Despite not being selected as one of the finalists, the project has received
special recognition for performing well in these areas.
Noel Spencer, Chair of Bolton at Home, said: “We are delighted the UCAN
project has received special recognition. It reflects a great achievement in
the way Bolton at Home aims to develop sustainable communities, which put
customers at the centre of things, and make a real difference to community
growth and cohesion.”
