Christmas was celebrated Caribbean style
this week, when a special party in Halliwell brought together Bolton’s
elderly communities to enjoy a West Indian inspired Christmas dinner.
Bolton at Home’s Urban Care and Neighbourhood (UCAN) centre in Oxford Grove,
Halliwell, is home to both the Bolton Afro-Caribbean Elders Group and the
Oxford Grove UCAN centre Pensioner Group.
The groups joined forces earlier this year to arrange coffee mornings, trips
out and fund raising activities together.
Sixty members gathered at the centre on Friday to enjoy a Christmas meal
which combined both English and Caribbean cuisine.
Noel Spencer, Chair of Bolton at Home, was guest speaker at the Christmas
party, and said: “This is a great time of year to reflect on the strong
community spirit shown in this local community. The enthusiasm of the groups
to share and keep important traditions alive is really admirable.”
Daphne Powell, Chair of the Bolton Afro-Caribbean Elders Group, added:
“Celebrating Christmas together is a fitting way to end a successful year
for our community groups, during which we have shared cultures and
strengthened friendships.”
