Your tenancy agreement is the document you sign when you agree to become the tenant of your home.

It is a contract between you and us and records information such as your name, the date you became our tenant and the rent. It also lists the other conditions you must keep to as a tenant.

In some circumstances you can apply to have the parties to tenancy agreement changed.

Joint Tenancy

You may want to share the responsibilities of your tenancy with someone who lives with you. In this case, you should contact your housing office for advice and assistance.

Succession

Succession is applied at the death of a sole or joint tenancy.
There can normally only be one succession to a tenancy.

Sole Tenancy

When a sole tenant dies, provided he was not himself a successor tenant, the tenancy may be passed to a tenant's spouse if the spouse occupied the property at the time of the tenant's death or to a member of the family, if the member of the family has lived in the property as their main home no less than 12 months.

There is no right to succession if the family member has not lived at the property for the past 12 months.

Joint Tenancy

Upon the death of a joint tenant, where there has been no previous succession, the remaining joint tenant automatically succeeds to the tenancy and a sole tenancy is created. There can normally be no further successions to this tenancy; there can be no further transfers or assignments once a succession has taken place.

If you wish to apply to have the parties to your tenancy agreement changed, please arrange to contact your local neighbourhood office to make an appointment with you local Tenancy Management Officer. (Please refer to useful links for details of all local Neighbourhood Offices).
