Tenants Permissions

Useful links

A tenant who wishes to change any aspect of their dwelling, other than internal decorations, must first seek Bolton at Home consent by submitting a written request including a detailed specification, if necessary to their Neighbourhood housing office. Telephone calls and verbal requests are not acceptable and the request must be put in writing. An application form is available from any Neighbourhood office or by clicking on the link below for Tenants permission for alteration request form (see useful links). A list of local housing offices can also be found on the link below (see useful links).

If a tenant wishes to build an extension or loft conversion, plans must be drawn
up and submitted to the Planning Department for appropriate approval as well as Bolton at Home.

Tenants requesting and being given permission to undertake gas or
Electrical works, must have the work undertaken by a gas Corgi registered
engineer or an electrician to the 16th Edition.

In the case of gas installations, once notified of the completed permission,
correct installation and safety check should be ordered via Technical Services
Section to ensure safety of the installation.

In the case of non-traditional constructed properties, and Lowton Cubbitt
properties in particular, we should not give our permission to remove any internal
walls in the property. This is because by removing internal walls, the tenant may
undermine the safety of the structure due to the nature of the design and
construction.

There is no hard or fast rule as to what will or will not be approved by Bolton at
Home in terms of alterations or improvement; the over riding requirement is that
the tenant asks for, and awaits permissions, before any changes are made to
the property.

Any alterations carried out without consent may be given retrospective
permission, but any works, which are badly carried out or dangerous, will not be
allowed.

A booklet entitled “Planning a guide for householders” is available from all Town
Halls or from the Planning Department upon request.
