Bolton at Home has 62 sheltered housing schemes throughout Bolton. Living in sheltered housing means that you have your own independent accommodation but also receive the Sheltered housing service provided by a scheme based Community Support Officer.

Sheltered accommodation

The accommodation in sheltered housing consists mainly of one and two bedroom flats both ground floor and first floor and also one and two bedroom bungalows.
There are 15 schemes which also have community centres attached and a further 9 schemes which are located "under one roof".

In "under one roof" schemes the accommodation is accessed through a secure main front door via corridors to the individual flat doors.
All "under one roof" schemes and schemes with community centres offer a range of social activities including lunch clubs, exercise, bingo, coffee mornings and occasional trips.

Community Support Officer (CSO)

Each sheltered scheme has a designated Community Support Officer (CSO) who works 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday and is dedicated to our customer's welfare. Not all CSO's now live in sheltered sites; however, they are all easily contacted by customers and most have an office base near to their scheme and respond to emergencies on site within 5 minutes.

When you move into your home, your CSO will tell you all about the role of the CSO, what additional services we provide and what social activities take place on or near to the scheme where you live.

The CSO attached to your scheme will intercom you every morning before 10am from Monday to Friday (not including Bank Holidays). They will also visit you at least once a week to check on your wellbeing and to discuss with you whether you require any additional help to enable you to remain living independently in your own accommodation, i.e. referrals for assistance with benefits through Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB).

If you are ill or need additional assistance, your CSO will visit you more frequently. You will be given a leaflet which sets out in detail the service provided by your CSO when you move into your property.

What to do when the CSO is not on duty

When the CSO is not on duty your calls go through to our Careline control centre where they will be dealt with by one of our Careline Operators. We also have a mobile service, which can call on you out of hours to offer assistance, see "Careline service" for details. Any issues that arise on the site where you live in the evening or at weekend are relayed to your CSO every morning when she or he comes on duty

Equipment

All the accommodation in sheltered housing is linked by intercom equipment to the Community Support Officer (CSO) for the site. If you need to contact your CSO all sheltered housing has equipment installed in the property to enable you to contact your CSO. This is most likely to be pull cords in each room which you can pull to summon assistance.

You may also request a pendant which can be worn in a variety of ways and can also be used to summon assistance. When your CSO is on site the calls appear on the CSO's handset, which is carried all the time. She or he will then respond immediately.

How much will it cost?

There is a weekly charge for the Sheltered housing and Careline services, currently £11.85, and in some circumstances you may get help with these charges through Supporting People Grant. If you are currently in receipt of Housing Benefit, you will automatically receive Supporting People Grant.

If you are not in receipt of Housing Benefit, you can apply for Supporting People Grant through a Fairer charging assessment.
This will be dealt with by the Housing officer when you sign for your sheltered accommodation.
