Definition of a racist incident

"A racist incident is any incident which is perceived to be racist by the victim or any other person."

(Source: Stephen Lawrence Inquiry Report by Sir William Macpherson of Cluny.)

The racial harassment service aims to:

Ensure that all reports of incidents of Racial harassment on Council estates throughout the Borough are sensitively investigated.

Ensure that appropriate action is taken against perpetrators and all available support is provided to the customers who are the unfortunate victims of this anti-social behaviour.

Who provides the service?

The Service is currently provided by one Racial Harassment Officer with a Borough-wide brief to investigate incidents of racial harassment on Council estates.

What to do if you are a victim:

If you are a Council tenant you should:

Report the attack to the Police as soon as possible and ask the police officers to complete a Greater Manchester Police Hate Crime/incident report form and keep the top copy for your records.

Report the incident to your Housing officer at your local Housing Office

or alternatively contact the Racial Harassment Officer on (01204) 335752.

Write down details for the police and Bolton at Home and keep a copy.

For example;

If you are a Housing Association tenant you should:

Do the same as a Council tenant but you would need to contact your respective Housing Association.

Alternatively, you could contact the Citizens Advice Bureau on telephone (01204) 900213 or Bolton Racial Equality Council on (01204) 331002.

If you are a Private Sector tenant you should:

Do the same as above but you would need to contact your Private Landlord.
Alternatively you could contact the Housing Advice Centre link to Housing Advice general Leaflet page 1, the Citizens Advice Bureau on 01204 900213 or Bolton Racial Equality Council on 01204 331002.

If you are an Owner Occupier:

You would need to contact the police.
If you are an owner occupier of an ex-Council house then please follow instructions as for Council tenants above.
