Getting help

If you have nowhere to live or won't have in the future, we can offer you advice, assistance and possible housing. What we can do for you will depend on your situation. If you are homeless and have nowhere to stay at night, you will be offered advice and assistance on the same day. If you are homeless and are due to come out of hospital, we will make sure you get advice and support within five working days. Where we can, we will offer you temporary housing. In some cases, we may be able to offer you permanent housing.

If you need help or want more information phone our Homeless Welfare Section on 01204 335830 or call into the Housing Options Centre, The Link, 1 Silverwell Lane, Bolton BL1 1QN.
Or, phone our Housing Advice Service on 01204 335900 or call into the Housing Options Centre, Silverwell House, Bolton BL1 1QN.

You can formally apply for assistance as homeless, and Homeless Welfare will take details of and assess your circumstances. We will assess your application under the 1996 Housing Act to determine what service is offered to you. Contact Homeless Welfare for more details.

What if I don't agree?

Once we've looked at your application, we will decide whether we think you are homeless or not. If you disagree with us, you can ask us to review our decision. We can look again at whether you should receive our help, what help we should provide and what kind of housing you have been offered.

If you want a review, you must ask within 28 days of our decision. After review has been held, we will tell you of the decision within 56 days of the date you asked for the review. We will write to you with the reasons for the decision.

The review will be carried out by an officer of the council who was not involved in the first decision and who is more senior than the officer (or officers) who made the first decision.

What if I still don't agree?

If you are still unhappy or we or we have not told you of our decision within 56 days of you asking for the review, you can appeal to the County Court. If you want to appeal to the County Court, you must do so within 21 days of our review decision.

What if I'm 16 or 17?

If you are under 18, you should contact you local Social Services district office and ask to see the Duty Social Worker.

You can get advice and support from the Housing Advice Service or contact Bolton Young Person's Advice and Support Service on 01204 362002

General standards

We have a number of standards that all Bolton at Home services aim to meet:
We will answer letters and complaints within 10 working days. If we need to investigate further and a full reply cannot be given, we will send you an acknowledgement and then send the full reply within a further 10 working days.
You won't have to wait longer than five minutes in a reception area.
If you are not satisfied with the way you have been treated you can make an appointment to see the manager.

We will regularly seek your views on the services we provide and use this and other information to monitor how we are performing. We will also take action if we are not meeting our standards and set targets for improving our performance.

Comments, compliments and complaints

We have a form on which you can make suggestions about how we can improve our services or compliment us on a service you received. We also have a complaint form, which is under number 2 in this series of leaflets. These are available from reception areas or contact us directly and we will send you one. You can also give us feedback via our website www.bolton.gov.uk. Just log on and go to the feedback button where you will find an email form. Fill it in, send it back to us and we will ensure your comments get passed on.
