Eldon Street

A project initiated by Eldon Street Residents Association, Tonge Moor. Local residents took part in an arts based consultation with artist Penny Butterworth to identify and address issues concerning the appearance of the area.

The residents’ ideas were then developed into a workable design by the artist in partnership with Bolton at Home. The design included raised beds, a community garden and mosaic, metal, ceramic and resin pieces. Work was completed in September and the residents organised an open day in October 2005.

Oldhams Home Zone

Following a successful Home Zone bid, Oldhams Residents Association, Astley Bridge, sought Housing Percent for Art and Global Grants funding for an intensive process of community consultation.

A team of 15 local people were trained in a range of creative consultation techniques in order to conduct the Home Zone consultation. Proposals were then developed for the design, fabrication and installation of art works into the physical scheme, and a menu of arts features was established for incorporation into the highway, retaining walls and roundabout.

Oak Avenue Acorn Project

A project involving residents of Brazley and Claypool Residents Association in Horwich in partnership with Bolton at Home’s Housing Percent for Art, Technical Services and Customer Involvement Teams.

Local artist Michelle Sheree was commissioned to work with the elderly residents during a number of consultation workshops to produce designs for the communal garden area, which were developed by the artist and incorporated into the garden. Features include creative washing line posts, fence trellis panels, pagoda, bird table and bird bath/feeder and mosaic-inlaid paving.

Jauncey Street Story Wall

For this BCH Percent for Art project, delivered in partnership between Irwell Valley Housing Association and Bolton at Home Regeneration Group, and supported by the Housing Percent for Art team, writer Stephen Fielding was commissioned to write a short story to be incorporated into an end perimeter wall of a small private sector housing regeneration scheme in Deane.

Two visual artists, Suzanne Harulow and Mary Rudkin, then worked with local children on a summer play scheme to design illustrations, which together with the text were laser cut and coloured into a section of the brickwork. The story was ‘published’ by building the story panel bricks into the wall.

Sunnyside Park Round Bed

A project building on previous work on the Park, which has been hugely successful with a dramatic increase in the use of the Park by all age groups.

Friends of Sunnyside Park worked with Action Factory Community Arts Ltd and Bolton Council’s Greenspace Management to develop designs including creative seating and a centre piece, which were installed in the location of the round bed at the entrance to the Park. A launch event was held in February 2006, in conjunction with the Housing Percent for Art funded ‘Lights of the Future’ lantern parade.

Thornbank Signs

This project involved local residents in designing signage for the Thornbank Flats including the three high rises Blackshaw House, Fernstead and Rogerstead.

A steering group of residents was set up to lead on this project and Fuse Graphic Design was commissioned to consult residents, and to produce and install the designs.
