Washacre Activate Skills Project

This project provides new learning opportunities for the over 50’s and lone parents in the Washacre area by running a number of free basic computer courses and basic skills courses and piloting a community job club which offers CV writing, internet job searches, confidence building and support to improve numeracy and literacy and equip participants with the necessary skills to aid them to re-enter the labour market.

Harmony Youth Project

To target the most disaffected young people from deprived areas of Bolton by offering them a wide range of accredited courses within the field of performing arts, by offering taster courses in IT tuition, drama, dance, vocal, computer work and creative writing / composing to enable them to move towards training at a higher level and therefore improve their future prospects.

DBBC – Alan Martland

To fund media techniques in Radio training for special needs students who fall outside the mainstream schooling process. This will be for students who are going to need far more individual training before becoming eligible to move forward onto other courses or into the workplace. The course will be flexible so that students may take up to 12 months before they complete the work and are accredited with the Open College North West certificate which is a recognised certificate leading to NVQ’s etc.

Harmony Group – Asma Adia

To fund a series of workshops which will focus on improving the employment prospects of around 100 BME women. This will improve their awareness of employment opportunities, enhance their self confidence and equip the women with key job search skills to make them ready for employment. Workshops being offered are:- CV Preparation, Job Centre Surgery, Interview Skills, Assertiveness Course, First Aid Course, How to search for a job, Writing application letters, Basic IT Literacy, Local Employer visits, Advice Surgery around education and training opportunities

Moses Gate Ucan Centre

To provide basic skills and IT sessions for Moses Gate residents to improve employability and build confidence. In particular aimed at people with disabilities, BME residents, over 50’s and lone parents the project will also fund an open day event to promote the activities and network with agencies.

Asian Roots Exhibition – Hanif Alli

To engage 50 local Asian women with a view to empowering them socially and academically, via an outreach worker who will meet with the women in their homes, and local venues i.e. shops and schools to give them confidence to take part in community based training courses and activities. The courses will be tailored to meet individual needs and will be provided in confidence building, English language skills, basic computer skills and social skills in a safe environment. In addition the women will take part in a multi language local Asian heritage exhibition of “how it was like”.

The Phoenix – Wendy Ellis

This project is aimed at lone parents and is achieved through arts based workshops, one to one sessions and group sessions covering CV writing, interview techniques, job applications and basic skills training. Participants will also develop a personal portfolio to demonstrate their learning and achievement.

Dominic Conway – Bolton Community Homes

To support the development of 30 local people from lone parents, disabled, over 50 or from BME backgrounds to train in specific research methods and methodological models. They will also benefit from a course to enable them to become trainers in their own right. Once trained they will be active in analysing the results from a feasibility study through setting up the business and developing a network of clients and stakeholders. The whole process will establish a social enterprise initiative which will offer stability and employment for the participants.

Oxford Grove Ucan Centre

This project offers participants the opportunity to learn basic home DIY skills and also gain an understanding of Health and Safety when handling equipment and planning DIY work. Also participants will attend motorbike maintenance workshops delivered by a trained mechanic. The projects aims are to increase skills, build confidence, self esteem and increase opportunities for employment and further training.

Oldhams Ucan Centre

Workshops and courses for lone parents, people with disabilities ethnic minorities and over 50’s participants offering IT, job searches, CV’s assertiveness and confidence building, first aid, basic skills (Maths and English), health and fitness, beauty and parents returning to work and budgeting skills, with an end of project event being held to hand out certificates to the participants.

Rumworth Womens Group

Provision of an open voluntary initiative that offers practical and lifelong learning skills to women in building their confidence and skills for career development. Courses being provided include: numeracy and basic IT to enable empowerment and create opportunities towards gaining employment.

Nearis in Bolton

To provide English as a second or other language (ESOL) and job skills classes and IT training for people from a BME background and develop volunteers learning champions to support new learners. Students will learn how to create CV’s and other IT based work. Non English speaking learners will develop skills which will help them to function in society on a basic level.

Asian Elders Resource Centre

To provide basic skills training courses for people over the age of 50 from minority ethnic communities who are socially isolated, disabled or an adult carer. Courses include: IT skills, English (ESOL).

New Bolton Somali Community Association

To provide training sessions and workshops for people from a BME background. Workshops will cover employment related activities such as interview skills, job applications, CV’s, presentations, job searches and confidence building skills. Participants will also undergo assignments and examinations.

Bolton Literacy Trust – Sue Hoey

The trust are funding training to vulnerable groups living in Great Lever, Johnson Fold, Washacre and Rumworth areas to enable them to obtain skills for life, literacy, numeracy and ESOL (English for speakers of other languages). Basic and improvers IT classes and parent craft classes.

Bolton Community Association – Fazal Khan

To provide basic skills training courses for people over the age of 50 from minority ethnic communities. Courses include: basic IT skills and family learning, including job search. The project will help reduce worklessness and improve people’s skills and quality of life.

MHIST – Melvin Bradley

To provide a series of structured esteem and confidence building courses for people who experience mental health problems. Courses will provide individual sessions on experimental learning leading to a rise in self confidence of each delegate. Sessions will cover assertiveness, saying no, visualisation, trusting yourself, stress reduction, dealing with put downs and expressing feelings.

Tonge Fold UCAN Centre – Daniel Mountford

A package of learning support for disabled people, BME and lone parents. The project will deliver IT for all abilities, with a focus on beginners most who have not used IT before. There will also be a package of confidence building, arts and crafts sessions by volunteer tutors which will increase self esteem and confidence.

High Street & Derby Youth Group – Faruk Kala

Project to assist young people to overcome various disadvantages as a result of their lack of key skills, qualifications, and long term employment to plan and take steps towards achieving a goal, moving towards employment, training or education opportunities. By the end of the course participants will have acquired job preparation skills, business planning, ICT skills, enterprise skills, communication skills, and problem solving.

Embrace Art & Drama Project – Sally Jalloh

Project will provide ICT, English, Maths and Equal Opportunity provision to participants covering customer service, selling techniques, team working and communication skills.

The Great Lever Voice Project – Val Johnson

Provide vocational qualifications for 30 young people aged 16 – 19 years old the training will assist social and personal development and will include relevant training to suit individual needs they will be taught interview techniques, job search activities, help them to produce CV’s and offer AQA awards in various subjects to assist within their chosen career.

Successful projects 2006

New Bolton Somali Community Association

To fund a project focusing on drama and the arts for 16 – 25 yr old Somalis who are unemployed and face barriers to employment because of drug abuse. Courses will aide skills in acting techniques, public speaking and further encourage confidence building by offering advanced courses to enable the target group to access training and employment opportunities in this field.

Asian Elders Resource Centre

To facilitate and provide training courses to people over the age of 50 from minority ethnic communities who are socially isolated disabled or care for someone with a disability/mental health condition. The aim is to offer a range of training courses to empower Asian Older people and their carers with the main ethos to encourage them to liaise and participate with other mainstream organisations. Training courses will be offered in conjunction with Bolton College around Information Technology, English courses, Craft Work/Creative Arts, DIY/Gardening Courses, Sewing Courses, Cookery, Aromatherapy.

MHIST

To provide a series of structured esteem and confidence building courses for people who experience mental health problems. Sessions will cover topics such as stress reduction, assertiveness, dealing with put downs, ‘saying no’, visualisation, trusting yourself and expressing feelings.

UCAN Management Board – Oxford Grove Family History Project

To provide 10 – 15 local residents to acquire basic computer skills, researching skills and links with Bolton Museum and Archives. The group will engage in developing local history and heritage skills. This will involve looking at the social history of the area including gender roles, employment, income, housing, education, health, disability and ethnic minorities. Thereafter the group will develop a family history exhibition including the families of the Oxford Grove area which was showcased in Bolton Museum, Halliwell UCAN centre, and libraries.

High Street and Derby Youth Group

To provide life skills training sessions for young people from 16-24 years old from disadvantaged backgrounds to help them become more economically active. Activities to include job preparation skills, ICT skills, enterprise skills, personal development, self awareness and self esteem, problem solving and negotiating skills.

Bolton Steps

To fund specialised training for people with mental health issues in a safe supported environment that caters especially for disabled clients, which will help them to move forward into employment, education and the wider community by offering training in personal development, basic food hygiene courses, basic IT courses and computer maintenance courses.

Choices Youth Support

To fund lone parents to raise their aspirations for the future and to provide access to the local community college to take part in courses such as accessing the internet, use of a computer, confidence building sessions and residentials to encourage team building so that they can improve their employability.

Great Places Housing Group – Daniel Mountford

To fund a qualified IT support tutor to work alongside local residents for a 6 month period to deliver a programme of IT based 1-1 learning support aimed at people with disablilities, lone parents, ethnic minorities and over 50’s who are unemployed, providing new skills, pastoral support and enabling people to access the job market. The project will also build confidence for socially isolated and vulnerable individuals provide support for learning new technology based skills and help improve literacy and basic skills.

BCOM & Pearl Training

To fund a programme of training for BME men between 35 – 55 years old to enable them to move away from benefits and improve their prospects in the labour market. Training to include English skills, build self esteem, IT courses, Employment, Enterprise and basic job seeking skills.

St Vincents Support Group – Maureen Walsh

To provide a tutor and crèche facility for hard to reach and disadvantaged members of the community to enable learning in a local friendly environment. On offer will be specific courses for people who have little or no knowledge of computers, Basic Skills or IT. It is hoped that these courses will empower people by providing support and guidance which will enable them to go onto further training, employment or education.

The Greenhouse Project

To provide a series of 4 introductory modules (6 weeks each) over a 10 month period teaching conversational English with practical learning to local isolated individuals and communities particularly from BME backgrounds including Refugees who have recently been granted citizenship. Courses to include introduction to confidence building, ‘welcome to the North West’ a basic introduction to the local towns and landmarks in the North West, balance of food and health, particularly aimed at lone parents or those on a low income, and British culture and traditions.

Bolton Literacy Trust

To provide training materials and training sessions to vulnerable groups living in Great Lever. Classes available would be skills for life – literacy, numeracy and English for speakers of other languages, Basic and improvers IT classes, family learning activities in the form of structured parent & toddler sessions, Share family learning and parent craft sessions.

Good Companions

A self support group who wish to provide life skills training to their disabled allotment members. Training courses would be provided via experienced volunteer trainers in confidence building, preparation of food & food hygiene, basic skills training in reading, writing and numeracy skills, self esteem and empowerment courses, DIY and Gardening courses, Healthy living. Other impacts from these courses will help strengthen families as they will have respite from caring whilst family members attend courses to improve their confidence and lifestyles.

The Great Lever Voice

To provide vocational qualifications to young single parents by bringing in professionals to teach life skills courses in a friendly atmosphere. Training will be provided to suit individual needs and courses on offer are interview techniques, job search activities, compilation of CV’s, first aid, basic hygiene and health and safety and manual handling courses, business study supermarket AQA awards. Workshops will be provided on healthy eating, substance misuse budgeting skills and sexual health. The outcomes will be that these young people will be better placed to become active community members and to assist in breaking the cycle of unemployment and raise aspirations and achievements.

Bolton Women’s Aid – Fortalice

Fortalice provides temporary emergency accommodation and advice and support services for women and children who are currently experiencing domestic violence. The aim of the project is to recruit and train volunteers who have disabilities or are from minority groups to support service users.

Naya Sawera Asian Womens Group – Mrs Mussarrat Shafiq

To provide a series of basic skills courses for local Asian women in the Tonge and Haulgh areas of Bolton who do not normally access traditional educational training routes. Courses would include food hygiene, first aid, confidence building, assertiveness and healthy eating.

Romano Dziwipen

To provide basic English classes for non English speaking students to improve their prospects to seek and obtain employment, and to increase their self confidence and self esteem.

Successful projects 2005 Round 2

Respect Counselling & Mentoring Project

Provision of a range of basic skills courses to encourage people under the influence of drugs to learn the benefits of reducing or stopping drug taking which will then enable them to start training and looking towards a goal of employment. Also to look at the issue of discrimination of Minority Ethnic groups accessing employment and building a network of employment and training opportunities for these groups to access. i.e. Unemployment Centre, Bolton's Black and Ethnic Minority Training (Bark St) Bolton's Ethnic Business Centre, BOAT and Jobcentre Plus.

P C Consulting

To offer a mentoring and advocacy service to encourage individuals from the African and Afro Caribbean communities to enter into commerce. The project will provide a framework of basic skills support training, confidence building and an introduction to business with an emphasis on personnel development and computing. PC Consulting will work with local groups including unemployed men and women, young parents in particular, empowering them to improve the quality of life by reducing benefit dependency and increasing business engagement.

Bolton Patients Council for Mental Health

One of the core aims is to promote a positive awareness of the image of mental health by staging high profile events that are designed and managed and presented by users of the service the events cater for 100 people. The project aims to employ 6 service users on Permitted Earnings for the period of organising and staging 2 events giving individuals an opportunity to try out new skills and gain confidence which will help them in the future.

Bolton Community Homes

To provide funding to train 25 local people from BME and non BME communities to become Community Researchers and to inform local people about types of work available in research and to link them into current groups across Bolton who will require researchers. The programme consists of: Questionnaire Design, Sampling, Interview techniques, Analysis techniques - using laptops and statistics programme.

Stoneclough Action 2000 & Beyond

Deliver basic computing classes to the over 50's and single/lone parents in the Stoneclough area by utilising the Stoneclough Community Centre's facilities by the provision of basic IT skills, Internet skills, build confidence and self esteem, improve employability and provide childcare for users of the courses.

Successful projects 2005 Round 1

New Bolton Somali Community Association - Youth Worker

To fund a Youth worker to work with 16 - 25 yr old Somalis who are unemployed and face barriers to employment because of drug abuse. The youth worker will conduct courses that will aide their skills and build confidence to enable the target group to access employment.

Hibbert Community Regeneration Centre - Outreach Worker

UCAN Management Group - Specialist Worker

To build on a successful project aimed at 16 - 25 yr olds which has already been delivered previously to provide a progression route for young local people who are engaged in another evening youth initiative at the UCAN centre. To employ a specialist worker experienced in engaging with young socially excluded people of working age to develop basic skills and confidence to realise their true potential and raise aspirations. The worker will assess individual needs and give one to one support in job seeking and progression routes offering mentoring and advocacy and where necessary support the individual with any other social needs.

High Street and Derby Youth Group - Youth Workers

To provide 2 youth work sessions per week for young people from 13-19 years old up to 25 yrs old from a disadvantaged background. Activities to include job preparation skills, ICT skills, enterprise skills, personal development, self awareness and self esteem, problem solving and negotiating skills

The Haulgh Community Partnership - 'Business Planning for 2005 - 2008'

To follow on from 2004 funding to do consultation and community based research on the viability of a local resource centre of value being provided to the most marginalised groups in the Haulgh including refugees with permission to stay and work, single people living in bedsits and flats, adults on disability benefit and young parents seeking employment.

APNA Womens Project - Training Sessions

To provide training sessions / workshops for socially disadvantaged minority ethnic women aged 16+ to support Asian women in the community through provision of counselling to raise awareness and offer guidance and advice and promote independence.

Moses Gate Urban Care and Neighbourhood Centre - 'Computer Suite'

To provide and open access computer suite by purchasing two laptop computers, employ a basic skills/IT tutor and a crèche worker to support the existing computer provision which is located upstairs and therefore inaccessible to disabled customers. This will help to make the service 'all inclusive' to those members of the community who are traditionally disadvantaged by the barriers they face with learning and employment.

Asian Elders Initiative Resource Centre - Confidence Building Courses

To provide funding to encourage and engage Asian people aged 50 and over to participate in a range of training courses in IT, English, DIY, Confidence Building, Assertiveness, Creative Arts and Basic Skills Training, making them easily accessible for people as they are being delivered within the Asian Elders day centre in conjunction with Bolton Community College. The training will also be extended/offered to disabled adults.

Barnardos Phoenix Project - 'Celebration of our work'

Help women suffering from domestic violence to develop confidnece and self esteem by producing a book - creative skills, technical skills - photography, poetry, creative writing.

Brazley Community Centre - 'Training for back to work'

Fund training for local community to give new skills and help back into work. Training on running a community centre for voluntary committee members. Training for members of community. Basic skills, confidence, DIY.

UCAN Centre (Hatfield Road) - 'UCAN 16-25's'

Employ youth worker - 1 - 1 support for job seeking, mentoring and advocacy, visits to raise aspirations and build confidence (target age 16 - 25 yrs).

Harmony Youth Project

IT tuition, drama, dance, vocal, computer artwork, creative writing / composing. Develop skills. Put together DVD - use for monitoring / evaluation.

Haulgh Community Partnership - 'Business Planning for 2005 - 2008'

Community consultation and development of 3 yr plan involving key target groups; young people, young parents, unemployed, disabled, Asian community. Three main forms of impact - sustainability, public services, community facilities. Also, to develop a funding model.
