What is a Global Grant?

Global Grants are funded by the European Social Fund. The funding is awarded to projects that help people from disadvantaged communities or groups move closer to the labour market.

What kind of activities have previously been funded?

The following are examples of previous activities. A full list of successful projects is available here.

Oldhams Radio

Oldhams Regeneration Radio is a training project targeted at Young People on the estate to develop their skills and confidence focusing on radio production and production office skills. It will engage with young people, develop new skills, focus on new technologies and create a positive image for a disadvantaged community.

The project will develop local social capital on the estate through the training of 10 -12 local people in radio production techniques. They will then produce, design and broadcast material which involves local residents and groups for a 3 day local radio event. The project will draw on the expertise and support of DBBC, Bolton & Bury information, Advice and Guidance and BBC Outreach.

CHYP-SHOP

A project aimed at 16 - 21 age groups in the Hibbert St Area. It aims to involve young people in positive activities that distract them from: ASB, Noise Nuisance, Petty Crime, Vandalism, Alcohol and Drug Use. It aims to improve Fitness, Nutrition, Personal Well Being, confidence and Conscience. Aims will be achieved through Dance, MC, and Cookery etc
Activities will be linked to jobs and training. Skills will be developed to be used at interviews and in workplace. Further educational opportunities will be identified and the young people will produce portfolio to demonstrate their achievements.

Behind Closed Doors

Following an initial award to the Phoenix Project last year for a photography project, the women have developed a series of striking images in collaboration with artist Poulomi Desai. These images are now to be developed into an exhibition and a variety of print material to promote messages about the issues and raise awareness in their own community.

It is proposed to launch the print material and exhibition at an opening in Oct as part of Black History month, possibly at the UCAN Centre, Hatfield Rd. There is then the potential for further exhibition in Bolton and regionally where this work may be of interest.

Oxford Grove UCAN Management Group

Portico Housing in continuing to support the use of arts to regenerate an area and act as a catalyst for social change is seeking to employ a community development consultant to develop a management committee to take the UCAN centre for Oxford Grove into the next phase. The consultant will be working with Portico Housing and the Housing Percent for Art Team to lead in the transition of the management of the UCAN centre from an existing temporary site, to a new purpose built development. The arts will be a vital tool in the development process of the management group.

After intensive consultation in 1999 the UCAN centre was set up to support the needs of local residents within the Oxford Grove area. Portico worked with Housing Percent for Art to deliver art projects that encouraged community ownership and investment in the centre for example a mural project detailing the setting up of the scheme and a ceramic signage project involving local residents in the design and fabrication process. The arts were employed to consult with local school children on their particular issues.

As well as offering advice and support on housing issues the centre also offers training in DIY, IT skills, career/ educational advice sessions and a twice weekly after school kids club run by local volunteers, the centre also offers drop in use of IT facilities. Along with the physical regeneration of the area, the success of the centre has been a vital part of the social renewal of Oxford Grove.

In September 2002 the centre will be moving 200yds to a newly created venue, the building will also house a library, exhibition spaces, multi functional office/ meeting areas/ IT facilities, and a mezzanine area with the potential to be used as private rented office/ work units.

Homeless Speak Out

This is an initiative to engage with members of the homeless community through a series of arts based event days. The purpose is to enable this community to identify key needs and issues and then articulate both needs and aspirations through a variety of appropriate art forms. These messages will be taken to identify decision makers with a view to contributing to, and influencing relevant strategies.

There will be 3 full day events held in February. Pre training work will be done to develop a pool of video operators, and follow up work will continue in March to co-ordinate all the messages.

An important factor is to develop the life skills and self esteem of the participants, and equip them to engage with positive individual developments in training, education and seeking employment.

The programme will also contribute to the Beacon activities of Bolton MBC's Community Housing Services, including a homelessness conference planned for May '04.

Kearsley Community Centre

The project will conduct a consultation around the proposed use of this new community facility - formerly a Bolton at Home property. A feasibility study will be carried out with potential users to assess need and usage of the building.

This process will also focus on developing the skills and capacity of the community group that will subsequently manage the facility to maximise its potential. It will also assist in resolving the status of the group which are unclear whether to become a charity or not.

As well as using creative techniques in the feasibility process, the project will also have an arts element to develop a name, logo and signage for the new building.
