Bolton at Home is responsible for carrying out annual gas safety checks
on appliances belonging to Bolton Council.
These checks are very important to the Health and Safety of our customers as
a faulty appliance can emit harmful carbon monoxide fumes or natural gas can
escape and cause an explosion. You and your family could be at risk if these
safety checks are not carried out.
As a landlord we must comply with Gas Safety Regulations which places a
legal duty on us to undertake a gas safety check every 12 months.
Our team of highly trained CORGI registered gas engineers work Monday to
Saturday 8.00am – 8.30pm to carry out this service.
Always ask to see proof of identity before allowing anyone into your home.
An appointment will automatically be sent to you 10 days before the
safety check is due. This will enable you to agree a time slot or change the
date if it is not convenient, by contacting us on 01204 335060 as
soon as possible, as slots are limited. Please note calls can be made
between 9.00am - 4.00pm Mon - Fri, with the last visit by an engineer at
approx 7.30pm Mon - Sat.
We will send you a reminder card a couple of days prior to the appointment
date to ensure we can gain access to your home. You have a duty under your
Tenancy Agreement to allow us access to your property.
If our engineer is unable to gain access he will leave a card asking you to
contact the Gas Servicing Department on 01204 335060 and a further
appointment will be arranged.
If you do not contact us we will send you a second appointment.
If after two appointments we have been unable to complete the required
safety checks, which are required by law, you have 30 working days to
contact us to arrange access before we start legal proceedings. Please don’t
ignore the appointments as this may put your safety and the safety of others
at risk. If necessary we will take court action which could, at worst,
result in your eviction.
The dangers if we cannot gain access to your property could be life
threatening…..
If appliances are not maintained or fitted correctly they can produce excess
carbon monoxide which is highly poisonous, and could kill.
You can’t see it, smell it, or taste it.
The symptoms are very similar to flu - tiredness, drowsiness, headache,
nausea, pains in the chest and stomach. If you or your family have these
symptoms when an appliance is on, or smell gas, you must do the following:
If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning seek urgent medical advice.
BE SAFE. GIVE US ACCESS TO YOUR PROPERTY ON THE APPOINTED DAY
Always keep manufacturers instructions in a safe place and readily accessible.
Please note: it is our responsibility to check all flues; therefore we will need to remove and refit your gas fire to gain access to the chimney. If a flue runs through a bedroom or into the attic we will need access to these rooms to complete the checks. If the fire is owned by the customer we will require the manufacturer’s instructions to enable the fire to be refitted, if they cannot be supplied unfortunately under the Gas Safety Regulations we are required to isolate the appliance.
The map below provides an estimate as to when the gas servicing team will
be in your area.
If you haven’t had a gas safety check in the last 12 months please contact
01204 335060.

If you own a gas appliance, such as a cooker, fire, hob etc, it is your
responsibility to arrange for a safety check to be completed (recommended
every 12 months). You must use a CORGI registered engineer, details can be
found in your local Yellow
Pages or Thomson
Directory. (External sites, open in a new window)
If our engineers feel on visual inspection an appliance is dangerous, we
have a duty to protect you and will isolate the appliance. It will then be
your responsibility to have your appliance repaired.

If you wish to install your own appliance you must first apply for written
permission from Bolton at Home. You will need to complete a ‘Tenants
Permission Request Form’ which are available from the One Stop Shop or by
calling 01204 338200.
Once completed, send the form to your Community Manager at your local
Neighbourhood Housing Office who will then contact you in writing.
