Bolton at Home's Disability team provide advice, help and guidance to provide major adaptations for disabled people living in Bolton. The aim is to enable disabled and frail elderly people maintain independence in their homes. This help is provided in both the public and private sectors.
Adaptations requiring structural modification of a dwelling valued at over £1000. They will be funded as a means tested grant for private houses and as a funded adaptation for house in the public sector. Typical works are stair lifts, level access showers, ramps etc.
A grant which is available towards the cost of providing specific major adaptations, in cases where equipment or minor adaptations, usually provided by Social Services, do not meet your assessed needs.
Before a Disabled Facilities Grant can be considered an officer must assess the specific needs of the disabled person. The officer will complete a detailed assessment of your needs and will support any adaptations that are necessary and appropriate.
This will be based on your existing home, your individual needs, the eligibility criteria. They will take into account, the nature of your condition, the physical problems you have, the needs of your carers, family and the suitability of your home. All these must be satisfied before any request for a Disabled Facilities Grant can be considered.
Once the assessment of needs has been done we can then go on to decide whether the proposed works are both reasonable and practical having regard to the age and condition of the building.
If major adaptations are supported you will be subject to a means test which assesses how much, if anything, you must contribute towards the cost of the works. The amount of grant is what is needed to meet the cost of works over and above your contribution. The grant is also subject to a maximum limit.
The means test applies to the disabled person and their partners. In the case of a disabled child the means test also applies to parents/guardians.
Queries regarding the means test can be answered by contacting the Disability Team on 01204 335858.
An enquiry pack is available from the Disability team or you can submit your details on-line by completing the Disabled facilities adaption/grant enquiry form
Overcrowding is the cause of your problems or your property requires structural repairs, these are not covered by the scope of the grant.
You must wait until your enquiry has been supported and you have received a grant approval before any works can commence, as no grant can be given in retrospect.
