How does the Data Protection Act protect personal data?

By setting rules and conditions which all users of personal information (Data Controllers) must obey when obtaining and using information about you. The Act also provides you with certain rights which the data controllers must respect.

How do I know what type of information Bolton at Home is holding?

Bolton at Home has taken out a Notification under the DPA 1998 which lists all the information it processes. This can be seen in your Local Neighbourhood Office or on the internet at www.dataprotection.gov.uk (opens in a new window).

How do you ask to see information about you?

You should write to Bolton at Home asking to see your records. You will be sent a Subject Access Request Form. You can also apply online (opens in a new window).

Do you have to pay to see your information?

Bolton at Home charges a standard £10.00 fee for access.

How will you be given the information?

You will be given a copy to keep and check for accuracy. This will either be a printout from the computer or a photocopy of your manual records. You can ask for a different format if you wish.

What do you do if the information is incorrect?

You can write to Bolton at Home telling them what information is incorrect and asking for it to be corrected. You can also appeal to the Information Commissioner if Bolton at Home does not correct the information.
